About Project 1 in 5

Project 1 in 5 Dyslexia Tutoring is a private tutoring service providing 1:1 ratio tutoring sessions for those with reading and spelling difficulties. Located in Gilbert, Arizona, Project 1 in 5 Dyslexia Tutoring provides services in Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Queen Creek, San Tan Valley, and even remotely with video conferencing.

Each of our tutors is an experienced and certified teacher, specifically trained to use the Barton Reading and Spelling System. This Orton-Gillingham based program provides a systematic, explicit, and multi-sensory approach while helping students to build confidence by providing the proper interventions and strategies to become more independent learners.

The one-on-one teaching environment enables each of our tutors to meet each student’s specific needs while practicing at their own pace.

At Project 1 in 5, we embrace the differences of dyslexia, and help grow the learner as the individual they were designed to be.

Meet Our Tutors

Nicole Calvert, Founder of Project 1 in 5 Dyslexia Tutoring LLC

Nicole is originally from Minnesota, and has been in the Chandler/Gilbert area of Arizona since 1991. In 2006, she received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Arizona State University, and in 2007, she earned her master’s degree in Elementary Education from Northern Arizona University.

Nicole taught fourth grade for eight years in the Chandler Unified School District, before leaving the classroom and eventually starting Project 1 in 5 Dyslexia Tutoring in March of 2017. She is a Barton Certified Tutor, and is also trained in Spalding and Dibels.

Her passion for dyslexia began in 2014 when her daughter was identified with dyslexia. Her desire to know more continues to grow the more she works with this incredible population. She is excited for what the Barton Reading and Spelling System can do, and for the growth that students continue to make.

One day, Nicole hopes to see all children with dyslexia receiving the interventions and help they need.

Jamie Ferrara

Jamie has spent most of her life working with children. From an early age, she knew that is was what she wanted to do. She babysat and worked in daycare before attending Northern Arizona University, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education in 2004. Once she graduated, she taught Kindergarten for four years. She became a stay at home mom when her son was born. Once he reached school age, she decided to educate him at home so he could progress at his pace. She had her second child, a girl, who is now also schooled at home. Jamie has been teaching at home for 9 years now, and enjoys the challenge and flexibility it brings. She has learned several different methods of teaching and learning styles and understands how to adapt these styles to an individual child. It is rewarding to watch her children gain confidence academically and embrace their own love of learning. Jamie is also actively involved in the kids ministry at her church. Her goal is to make each child feel special and succeed.

Rachel Noggle

Rachel is a wife, mom to 5, educator and coach. She has a degree in education and after becoming a mom, she put it to good use homeschooling her kids since 2012. It was not smooth sailing, however, as her oldest child was floundering through school. After years of struggle with him, he finally got a diagnosis of dyslexia in 4th grade. Looking for help for this specific challenge was confusing. Fortunately, she discovered the Barton System and it has helped with her son’s confidence tremendously. Her youngest is also using the program, and thriving with the help. She now understands that she CAN read. Helping children learn how to succeed even with the “super power” of dyslexia, as she calls it, is an amazing experience.

Martha Basurto

Martha is originally from CA and moved to AZ in 2014.  Prior to moving to AZ, she worked for the City of Glendale in CA as the Benefits Manager for over 15 years, and holds a BS in Business Management.  Her intention to move to AZ was to be a stay at home mom, but that only lasted 3 months.  She returned to school and obtained her MA in Special Education.  She currently teaches in the Florence Unified School District and has been there for the last 6 years as a Special Education Teacher.

Martha lives in Queen Creek with her husband, two adult daughters (both are 25 years old - blended family) and her son (age 12).  As a parent of two children with Dyslexia, she’s a huge advocate for students who need special services in working through their learning difficulties.  She discovered the Barton Program with her older daughter who is now 25 years old, and knows the struggles a parent goes through to get the help for their child.  Martha was blessed to find her daughter’s tutor when she was 10 years old, and she personally saw the growth and benefits of the program.  When the opportunity came for her to be part of Project 1 in 5, she was excited to be part of the organization.
